The nursery is your baby's first space. It will also be the place where you'll be spending lots of time in. So, design one that reflects your style.. incorporate colors, textures, patterns, and items that you love.
1. Storage, storage, storage
There’s never too much storage space; you’ll be surprised by how a tiny one can take up so much space in your house (and in your hearts ♥). Having sufficient storage allows you to hide the mess of the day-to-day necessities, giving the room less clutter. And we strongly believe that a clean space can lead to a clear mind, which is so important especially when there are a whole lot of other things to stress and worry about.
Storage can have aesthetic value too! Think a combination of open and closed storage, and play with different types of materials and textures. For items that you’d prefer to stow away from sight and dust (such as clothes, towels, beddings, creams), a chest of drawers or shelves could be a good option.
2. Invest in a good black-out curtain or shades
The main goal of your nursery (especially at the early stages) is to act as a calm sanctuary for your little bub to sleep in. While having a bright, airy space is great for awake and play time, it is also crucial to have options for blocking out light, external sounds, and controlling air and temperature flow. For this, having a trusty black-out curtains or shades can be so important, especially for day-time naps. Don’t underestimate the importance of lighting in a nursery - you’ll be glad you made this investment when baby gets good sleep.
3. Choose furniture that grows with your child
Furniture can be expensive, hence you want to make sure that you get the most out of it. One tip is to choose furnitures that can be adapted as your baby grows up into his/her childhood years. Choose a cot that can be converted into a toddler bed, or a changing table that can be converted into a chest of drawers or shelves. Moveable furniture is also not a bad idea, as it makes it easy to switch out and reposition along the way. (just make sure that they are anchored securely onto the wall to prevent any accidental topples!)
4. Use the empty vertical spaces
The walls of your nursery are a great place to add your own stye. You could create a gallery wall above the changing table, or next to the cot (again, make sure anything you hang is securely positioned). We love how this mama has utilised her wall space to create a mini book-shelf.
Another way to adorn the walls is to use wall decals. Instead of doing up a mural (which can be expensive and time-consuming), wall decals are great options to add your own personality. They come in a multitude of designs - from small repeated patterns, to deliberate prints of wildlife or nature, or a statement piece to create a focal point in the nursery, or a dash of color on a muted wall. Best of all, they are non-permanent and can be easily removed so that you can change them up as your baby grows up.
